What is the purpose of a solitary retreat?
Praticing meditation in solitary retreat allows you to have a much deeper and more direct experience of your mind than is possible amid the many distractions of everyday life.
What do people do on solitary retreats?
The schedule you follow on retreat will be determined by your teacher or meditation instructor. Generally, one does 8 or more hours of meditation & study in 3 to 4 sessions a day with time in between for sleep, meals and relaxation. You do not write, listen to music or engage in other activities than meditation, study and domestic activities. On retreat you do not speak to or see anyone else and you do not leave your cabin except to go for a walk or take a shower at the main house.
